For the Mother of the Groom

A Great Gift !
I love the humorous approach to this rite of passage for any mother with a son - whether the son is 2 or 22!

Many "mothers of the groom" tend to feel that the marriage of a son is a "loss", or lacks the pageantry and planning of a daughter's wedding - this book takes that notion and turns it on its head!

Great fun and a great boost for those current or "potential" mothers of the groom!

The Groom's Mother finally has something of here own!!
I laughed, I cried!! It was short sweet and right to the point. I loved it! It is not only for the Mother of the Groom, but anyone dealing with weddings and brides!!!

For all Mother's of Sons!!
I never knew that when your son gets married it is a totaly male experience, even for the Mother of the Groom! This book helped me laugh during the trying times and now that the wedding is over, my new daughter - in law is still talking to me!! Thank you Mary Martin!!

Foundations of Finance (3rd Edition)

Review of Foundations of Finance by Arthur J. Keown
This is an excellent text. I've read it thoroughly. The material , as presented, assumes a robust course in accounting at the college level. This text is for a student desiring a complete rendition in basic finance topics and techniques. The text is replete with many examples and challenging problems of various complexities. The presentation is easy to read. The book is directed to students perhaps majoring in economics or finance. It is not a purely descriptive rendition of finance. A

considerable amount of so called "numbers crunching" is involved in reviewing this text. As such, the book serves the analytic student optimally. The text is devoid of the most complicated analytics inherent in "quantitatively oriented texts". There is a good appendix on the use of financial calculators ,as well as, present value calculations and other useful knowledge supplemental to the study of finance. This book would be most useful to students planning their careers as financial analysts, corporate planners or private entrepreneurs.

Of all those Management books...
This was the best. A very clear and concise book for the serious student being introduced to the subject of Finance. Other books on the subject I've seen are very abstruse or just plain hard to read aside from weighing a ton. I had another book twice as thick to complement this one and my class abandoned it in short order. This book is comparatively light and chalk full of useful ideas and examples laid out in an organized and methodical manner. The generous use of charts and tables was executed well. Probably as simple as finance can possibly be put while still retaining the rigor and teaching the processes necessary for making financial computations.

Topics included are on basic valuation of various securities and projects using discounted cash flows, capital budget management, liquidity management, etc. I'm still learning from it after school. There simply wasn't enough time to fully cover everything in the book that I would have wanted. Now I'm ready to tackle more advanced corporate finance books/materials.

This is an introductory book for someone who may be interested in becoming a financial analyst but is obviously geared to the educational market for use in schools. The academic slant limits its applicability somewhat. Although it may give a stock market player who wants to start understanding the systematic process involved in the valuation of securities on a cash flow basis some insight for example, discussion on valuation by multiples like P/Es is virtually absent.

Nonetheless a great book.

Best Finance Book It will help You Make $$$
I use this book at the University of Wisconsin Stout. I think this book is excellent. I'm taking a copy with me to London. "A must" if your a Finance major.

From Beautiful Downtown Burbank: A Critical History of Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In, 1968™1973
Published in Hardcover by McFarland & Company (February, 2000)
Author: Hal Erickson
Average review score:

Another Hal Erickson gem
It's been a year-and-a-half since Hal Erickson's "Sid and Marty Krofft" was published...too long for this reader, as Mr. Erickson is quickly becoming as vital to the world of TV history as Brooks and Marsh. The bulk of "From Beautiful Downtown Burbank" recaps the origin, growth, and ultimate demise of "Laugh-In" with Mr. Erickson's trademark savvy enthusiasm, the kind that comes only aftermonths of research and interviews. What's more, the book's appendix isn't to be missed, since you'd be hard pressed to find a more thorough "Laugh-In" episode guide anywhere (it even includes the never-been-syndicated sixth season). The lack of photographs is completely made up for by Mr. Erickson's gifted ability to recreate the show's backstage atmosphere. Can't ask for more than that in a history book... Perhaps the only question the book doesn't answer: why Ian Bernard replaced the program'soriginal theme song in the 2nd, 3rd, & 4th season, only to resurrect it in the 5th. Asking that is pure hairsplitting, though, and shouldn't dissuade anybody from doing themselves the favor of purchasing this book,a gripping read from a multi-talented writer. So until Columbia House or Rhino immortalize "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In" (heck, even after they do), "From Beautiful Downtown Burbank" is the definitive tribute to a marvelous and groundbreaking program.

Comedy classic
A very worthwhile piece of literature which belongs in any library of comedy or television. It chronicals the history of one of the best and most inventive events in TV history. The book is more the history of the show than the humor but it does contain lots of the wit and the flavor.. Now I want a book of the jokes with photos. Good work.. Buy it.

VERY INFORMATIVE
A thorough history of a legendary television classic. The book paints a picture of the popular culture of a time that will surely not be repeated. I highly recommend this for anyone who wants to learn about a fascinating era or just simply wants to revisit a phenomenon long gone.

Gecko's Complaint: Balinese Folktale
Published in Hardcover by Periplus Editions (May, 2003)
Authors: Ann Martin Bowler and I. Gusti Made Sukanada
Average review score:

Beautiful Balinese Art and Entertaining Folktale
The original art in Gecko's Complaint is delightful and the retold folktale is perfect for preschool through third graders. Every youngster I know could benefit from the lesson in the story. Ann Martin Bowler has created a children's book all primary teachers should add to their library.

Great artwork with a wonderful message for all
My 7 and 10 year old loved this book. We thought the jungles of Bali were beautifully illustrated. My sons thought the best picture was of the Rain's face. They also enjoyed the ending when Gecko no longer complained. This folktale is well written and it reinforces the importance of learning to live in peace with one another, to stop complaining, and to be content with what you have. Both children and adults will benefit from this important message.

Gecko is fun for all--no complaints!
Our family loves Ann Martin Bowler's delightful Indonesian tale of animals quick to blame others for their behavior. The gorgeous illustrations by I Gusti Made Sukanada make this retelling a sumptious glimpse of Bali and its enchanting folklore. You'll wish you could scamper up the banyon tree with Gecko and explore the lush jungle by the light of the fireflies.

Gooseberry Patch Old-Fashioned Country Christmas: A Holiday Keepsake of Recipes, Traditions, Homemade Gifts, Decorating Ideas & Favorite Childhood M
Published in Spiral-bound by Gooseberry Patch (01 December, 1992)
Authors: Vickie L. Hutchins, Gooseberry Patch, and Joann Martin
Average review score:

Best Christmas Book Ever!!
I have several of the Gooseberry Patch cookbooks but I have to admit that this is one of my favorites! Mainly because I like reading about the traditions and I will read it all throughout the year. One of the best hints is to help defray the cost of a Christmas tree during the holiday season, we decorate an old coffee container and tape it around the top and throw in all of our loose change all year round and believe me by December you will have enough money to buy a very nice tree and it doesn't seem to hurt the pocket book so much.

Creative food presented in a graphic style I love ---Buy it!
Every one of this series is read and enjoyed both for the tasty, homemade, loving recipes but equally for the hand drawn country illustraions. the spiral binding is handy in the kitchen and the cover makes it a cute addition to a shelf or table set up for the holidays.. No I don't work for the company I'm just a long time fan! Great for gifts, too. They are WELL received !

A one of a kind book
This book was definitely not a waste of money. It gives ideas for family traditions, homemade gifts, and lots of good recipes. This Gooseberry book would make a good holiday gift for any family member or friend who enjoys homemade items or craft activities.

Graphis New Media 1: A Compilation of New Media Design (Serial)
Published in Hardcover by Graphis Pr (May, 1996)
Authors: Clement Mok and B. Martin Pedersen
Average review score:

Maybe, the best web/multimedia design compilation.
Few books shows as mutch good taste in their selection. Graphicly objetive It's not married with any astethic trend. Doesn't intent to teach the inside of new medias, just what can be done with them.

A Must-Have Reference For Leading-Edge Designers
This book will blow you away! From the beginning, it presents three very different introductions about New Media. Without having gone any further than the intros, the reader is hooked. The descriptions of New Media as it exists today are thought-provoking to say the least. Once inside, there is very little confusion. The organization, supported by very intuitive diagrams, leads the reader from start to finish on actual projects. This is probably the best inspirational resource for anyone involved in charting, designing or developing interactive productions. As a current Interface Designer in New Media, I would highly recommend this book to anyone with a desire to further their design abilities in this rapidly growing and exciting medium.

Very Good reference for publishers, designers and webmasters
It's a complete refrence about planing, production, and implementing new media, such CD-ROMs, WebSites and other forms from tradicional designs. The examples are rich and explore many diferent steps of projects.

Grundrisse: Foundations of the Critique of Political Economy
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (November, 1993)
Authors: Karl Marx, Martin Nicolaus, and Martin Nickolaus
Average review score:

Tough but Worthwhile
A collection of seven notebooks on capital and money, drafted during the winter of 1857-8, exploring the themes and theses that dominate his later writings, including Marx's own version of Hegel's dialectics, and thoughts on alientation. While not as sophisticatedp--or lengthy--as Das Kapital, it remains a "must read" for anyone interested developing a sophisticated understanding of Marxist philosophy.

Critical Reading
Unlike many other works, the Grundrisse exposes in more obvious ways Marx's dialectical thought. The Introduction should really be read as a great antidote to the 1859 Preface to a Critique of Political Economy, which gave us the base-superstructure analogy. The weakest link in Marx's though may very well be found there. The Grundrisse Introduction starts from the point of view of class struggle, whereas there is no place for the class struggle as the driving force in the base-superstructure schema.

Also, Grundrisse starts in a different place from Capital. There is a reason for this, and a good discussion of this can be found in the writing of Raya Dunayevskaya and a counter discussion can be found in Roman Rosdolsky. The choice to eventually shelve the organization of the Grundrisse for the organization of Capital flows in part from the changes in the intervening years, most notably the U.S. Civil War.

Real life constantly shaped Marx's thinking, hardly fitting the representation we commonly get of him from ideologues and capital's priests (economists). As a result, Grundrisse also has serious limitations in its understanding of the logic of capital. Basing the entire understanding of Marxism and capital on Grundrisse leads to the kind of mistakes made by Italian Autononmist Marxism, esp. Antonio Negri, who find themselves engaged in a very subjectivist understanding of capitalism. A useful, but sympathetic, antidote can be found in Werner Bonefeld and John Holloway's writings.

A classical of marxian economic thought
This book is a sketch of what would become, a couple of years later, the author's masterpiece: Das Kapital. It was written in an intense effort during revolutionary agitations in Europe, such hard work had as goal to show the inherent contradictions of capitalism and the way it would soon collapse. Well, capitalism did not collapse then and did not so far, but this book remains a classic in the critique of classical political economy. It is indded shorter than Das Kapital, and in parts not as mature as, but it has the advantage of providing discussion on themes not discussed elsewhere in marxian works. Thus, the most famous part of Grundrisse are its Introduction and the part on "Pre-capitalistic modes of production". A must for anyone who wish to get acquainted with marxian thought.

Habla Malcolm X: discursos, entrevistas y declaraciones
Published in Paperback by Pathfinder Press (March, 1993)
Authors: Malcolm X, Martin Koppel, and Steve Clark
Average review score:

This man was a revolutionary internationalist fighter
In the past 10-15 years, an attempt has been made to blend Malcolm X into the general bland opinion of middle class and bourgeois class dominated Black thought. The movie about Malcolm by Spike Lee that excerpted the political struggle he carried out in his last year contributed to this attempt to hide Malcolm's revolutionary impact. Read these speeches and you see something different. Malcolm X did not look to join with America, but to join with fighters around the world from Vietnam to the Congo, from Brazil to China who were fighting American imperialism. He worked with fighters like Che Guevera and brought himself to the battlegrounds of civil rights in the south. Malcolm's speeches increasingly emphasized the different between "the house nigger" and the "field nigger," and he was proud to be for the later category as the leadership of the black struggle.
Read his own words. Malcolm X was a revolutionary.

His Own Words, the Way he wanted them!
his book of Malcolm X's Speeches was begun while Malcolm was alive with the publisher and the editor that
Malcolm selected, and speeches he wanted in the book. This is the Spanish edition of the the book that begins the series of books by Malcolm X published by Pathfinder Press in collaboration with his family as more speeches, interviews, and talks by Malcolm X have been discovered. The aim here is to put Malcolm X's words first. Read them for yourself. Find out why Malcolmwas a reasoned, passionate, but uncompromising opponent of US imperialism's wars against oppressed peoples, in Africa, in Vietnam, in the Mid-East. Malcolm can really inspire you about the fights we need.

Wonderful that these speeches are available in Spanish!
This book presents a selection of the speeches of Malcolm X, an outstanding revolutionary leader who emerged from the struggles of millions of Afro-Americans against racism in the United States during the 1950s and 1960s. Although he was assassinated in February 1965, Malcolm X left us an invaluable example and political legacy.

Malcolm X linked the struggle within the United States with the struggles of other oppressed peoples in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Just read his denunciations of U.S. intervention in the Congo, in Vietnam and the Middle East in those days -- and think today of Colombia, Venezuela, Afghanistan, Iran, the Philippines...

I particularly enjoyed the following speeches from this book: "I'm not an American but a victim of Americanism," (University of Ghana, May 1964); "Our problems and those of Africa are the same," (Harlem, November 1964); "Learn to see, to listen and to think for yourself," (Harlem, January 1965); "We seek a solution that will benefit the masses, not the upper class'" (Detroit, February 1965); and the article "The meeting between Malcolm X and Fidel Castro," (Hotel Teresa, Harlem, September 1960).
